The Four Cardinal Rules

Every armed security officer must follow strict firearm safety rules to prevent accidents and ensure responsible firearm handling. The Four Cardinal Rules of Firearm Safety are the foundation of all firearm training. These rules apply at all times, whether handling, carrying, or storing a firearm. Violating any of these rules can lead to serious injuries, fatalities, legal consequences, or job termination.

The Four Cardinal Rules of Firearm Safety

  1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded
Never assume a firearm is unloaded. Always check and verify its status before handling it. Even if you believe a firearm is unloaded, treat it with the same caution as a loaded weapon to avoid negligent discharges.
  2. Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy
Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Do not aim at people, objects, or areas where an unintentional discharge could cause harm. If you are not prepared to fire at a specific target, do not point your firearm at it.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire
Your trigger finger should remain outside the trigger guard and along the side of the firearm until you have properly identified your target and made the decision to fire. Many accidental discharges happen because of improper trigger discipline.
  4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it
Always identify your target before firing and consider what is behind and around it. Bullets can travel through walls, glass, or even an intended target, potentially injuring unintended persons. Never fire unless you are completely certain of your target and its surroundings.

Additional Firearm Safety Considerations

  • Always use the correct ammunition for your firearm.
  • Keep firearms secured and out of unauthorized hands when not in use.
  • Never handle a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication that impairs judgment.
  • Always follow your employer’s policies and state laws regarding firearm handling and storage.

Following these safety rules at all times ensures that firearms are used responsibly and reduces the risk of accidental harm. A security officer’s responsibility extends beyond just carrying a firearm; they must also demonstrate discipline, professionalism, and respect for safety.
