Role of a Security Officer

Observe and report

A Security Officer’s must continue to observe everything going on in the customer’s area to help prevent any problems.  If an incident does occur, the security officer should report the incident to their supervisor, law enforcement and the appropriate authorities.

 

Be visible

It is the responsibility of a security officer to make sure that they are clearly visible to those in the vicinity of the area they are hired to protect.  This is most helpful to be a deterrent to a crime.  Most criminals would reconsider any wrongful actions if they notice a security officer walking around on duty.

 

Act quickly and correctly in a crisis situation

A security officer not only sense a possible crisis, but he also acts quickly to help put an end to the situation.  This means that as a security officer, you must constantly be on alert.  You need to be trained properly on how to effectively respond to any number of dangerous situations.

 

Call for help when needed

In certain situations, a security officer may not be equipped to deal with a situation on their own.  Additionally, security officers are typically stationed to be a deterrent to possible crime.  In these situations, the security officer should immediately notify call the police.  Having the police get involved quickly, can hopefully save lives and remove criminals from the streets.

 

Be on alert

A security officer is hired to be on the lookout for any odd or strange behavior that could cause harm.  You will be using your sense of smell, hearing and eyesight.  Your senses should be alerted to various possible criminal actions.

 

Follow Procedures

As a security officer, you will be expected to follow certain policies established by your employer, as well as state regulations.  You will also be required to follow the post instruction orders which have been established for the site you will be working at.

 

Maintain Order

Security officers are often scheduled to work at large gatherings.  This is to help maintain the safety of people and property.

 

Receive visitors and guests

If a security officer is stationed at the entrance of a building or event, they are likely doubling as a receptionist since they will be the first to greet visitors and guests. This type of assignment requires an officer to be approachable, friendly and willing to help.

 

Security and Safety Precautions

Security officers are often called upon to advise their employers of security and safety precautions that should be taken. A security officer should also be prepared to explain the possible consequences of ignoring his advice in order to persuade his employer to follow his recommendations.  A security officer should do all they can to make sure that security and safety precautions are being followed.

 

Other Responsibilities

Security officers are often asked to perform additional duties other than the specific ones found in their post instructions.  They may be asked to take phone calls, respond to text and emails, run errands, etc.
