Prejudice & Discrimination

A point of view or a prejudgment about a person or class of persons based on opinion or bias.

●  Socially learned and usually grounded in misconceptions, misunderstandings and inflexible generalizations.

●  This is not a static attitude; it changes and alters depending on current perceptions and feelings.

Discrimination Defined

An action or behavior resulting in differential treatment based on unfair categorization and is a denial of justice.

●  When we act on our prejudices, we engage in discrimination.

●  Often involves keeping people out of activities or places because of the group to which they belong.

●  Discrimination is a problem facing all members of society

 

Differences Between Prejudice & Discrimination

●  Prejudices are a part of the human condition.

●  Because prejudice is a point of view it is difficult, if not impossible, to regulate.

●  Prejudices are not a violation of law.

●  Discrimination is a behavior or an action.

●  Discrimination is a violation of the law.
