Non Weapon Defense Techniques

Overview:

  • Weaponless defense techniques are designed so that the possibility of injury resulting from a confrontational situation can be reduced.
  • Techniques provided in this guide require physical contact with the suspect in defensive situations, not aggressive acts.
  • Techniques require training by professional instructors and constant practice to become proficient.

    Wrist Throw Take-Down Techniques

    • Used when the suspect attempts to grab the officer by the collar, to resist or attack the officer.
    • Suspect attempts to grab the officer’s collar or shirt.
    • Officer reaches with his left hand and grabs the suspect’s right hand in thewrist area.
    • Place your thumb on the back of the suspect’s hand with his fingers grasping the suspect’s hand encircling the thick portion of their thumb.
    • Place your right hand near the suspect’s thumb and snap suspect’s hand toward the ground.

    Arm Bar Wristlock Take-Down Technique

    • Another defensive technique when the suspect attempts to grab the officer.
    • Officer grabs suspect’s hand and places his thumb on top of the suspect’s hand. Officer then turns the suspect’s hand upward with the suspect’s palms facing upward.
    • Officer then places his other hand on top of the suspect’s elbow applying pressure by pushing downward.
    • From this position, the officer can then force the suspect to the ground by applying pressure to the suspect’s elbow.

    Hip Throw Take-Down Technique

    • Suspect attempts to strike the officer with his right hand.
    • Officer blocks the punch and grabs the suspect’s arm around the wristarea.
    • Officer then turns around so the suspect’s stomach is near the officer’s back. From this position, the officer pulls the suspect against his back and throws the suspect to the ground.
    • Officer keeps control of the suspect’s arm and handcuffs the suspect using the wristlock position.

    Shoulder Throw Take-Down Technique

    • Suspect attempts to strike the officer with his right hand.
    • Officer blocks the strike and grabs the suspects arm near the wrist area.
    • Officer, while holding on to the suspect’s arm, places the suspect’s arm over his shoulder.
    • Officer then pulls the suspect over his shoulder and places him on the ground keeping control of the suspect’s hand.
    • While on the ground, the suspect can then be placed in the arm bar wristlock position for handcuffing.

    Headlock Hold Escape Technique

    • Suspect places the officer in a head-lock hold, the officer should reach up and grab the suspect’s hair as he stomps on the suspect’s foot.
    • Officer should grab the suspect’s right wrist and pull down to establish an airway to breath.
    • Once suspect breaks the hold, the officer should keep control of the suspect’s hand and using the arm bar wristlock technique take the suspect to the ground.
    • Officer should place the suspect in the prone position for the high risk cuffing and arrest technique.

    Bear Hug Hold Escape

    • Officer can head-butt backward impacting the suspect’s nose.
    • Officer should then do the foot stomp or do a hammer fist strike to the suspect’s groin.
    • Officer may also strike the suspect in the rib area with his elbow.
    • Once the hold is broken, the officer should take the suspect to the ground in the prone position for handcuffing.

    Front Choke Hold Escape

    • When suspect grabs the officer around the neck from the front, the officer should raise his right hand over the top of the suspect’s hands, pivot sharply to the officer’s left to force the suspect to lose their hold.
    • When pivoting, the officer could raise their foot and back kick the suspect with a heel kick.
    • An officer should then take the suspect to the ground by an arm bar wristlock take-down technique.

    Rear Choke Hold

    • When suspect attempts to choke the officer from the rear, the officer must first obtain breathing clearance. Pulling down on the suspect’s forearm and biceps can do this.
    • Officer can strike the suspect in the groin area with a hammer fist blow, or complete the foot stomp.
    • Once the officer is released the officer should take the suspect down into the prone position for handcuffing.
