What Are Handheld Wands?
Handheld wands are portable metal detectors used as a backup tool for security screening. They are used when a walk-through metal detector (magnetometer) sounds an alarm, helping security officers locate the exact area where metal is detected. Wands are also used when no magnetometer is available, allowing officers to screen individuals manually.
Why Are Handheld Wands Important?
- Help pinpoint where metal is located on a person’s body.
- Allow officers to inspect individuals without physical searches, making screening less intrusive.
- Detect small metal objects that may not be visible.
- Ensure that all security alarms are properly checked before allowing entry.
Types of Handheld Wands
There are different types of wands, but they all function in a similar way:
- Flat wands – Wide surface area for scanning.
- Square wands – Compact and easy to maneuver.
- Round wands – Designed for smooth movement.
- Super wand – Offers 360-degree detection and extra sensitivity at the tip for detecting very small metal objects.
How to Use a Handheld Wand
- Hold the wand 1 to 2 inches away from the body. Do not touch the person with the wand.
- Move the wand back and forth slowly, covering the entire body from head to toe.
- If the wand beeps or vibrates, stop and scan the area again to confirm where the metal is located.
- Ask the individual to show the object that triggered the alarm.
- If the item is not a security concern, allow them to proceed.
- If the person cannot explain the object, follow post instructions, which may include a visual inspection, further questioning, or denying entry.
What to Do If the Wand Sounds an Alarm
- Politely ask the individual to remove any metal objects (keys, belts, phones, jewelry, etc.) and scan again.
- If the wand continues to detect metal, notify a supervisor or follow security procedures.
- If prohibited items (weapons, unauthorized tools, or dangerous objects) are found, follow post instructions for reporting and handling the situation.
- If an individual refuses to comply, follow company policy for escalation, which may involve denying entry or contacting law enforcement.
Incident Reporting & Supervisor Notification
- Document the incident in a report, including the person’s name, time of screening, what was detected, and how the situation was handled.
- If the situation involves a prohibited or suspicious item, notify a supervisor immediately.
- If necessary, file an official incident report according to company policy.
Handheld wands are an essential tool for security officers, helping to locate hidden metal objects and prevent unauthorized items from entering a secure area. Always use the wand correctly, follow screening procedures, and document any incidents to maintain security and professionalism.
