ETHICS & PROFESSIONALISM

Ethics Defined – (P.J. Ortmeier 2004)

  • Ethics involves standards of moral principles and focuses on the concept of right and wrong and standards of behavior.
  • Ethical standards dictate behavior when law or precedent, which may prescribe behavior, does not exist. Conducting oneself according to a acceptable ethical standard, whether the profession has a code of ethics or not, means doing the right thing at the right time. Ethical conduct relates to qualities and actions that are morally correct, such as honesty and appropriate behavior.
  • Unethical conduct refers to immoral behavior such as corrupt practices, dishonesty, and violation of acceptable standards. Ethical behavior is based on virtues, values, morality, and appropriate choices.

Potential ethical problems areas in the security profession include:

  • Corruption
  • Discrimination
  • Violation of Right to Privacy
  • Violation of Rights under the U.S. Constitution
  • Negligence
  • Uncivil Conduct
  • Use of Excessive Force
