What is an AVI System?

Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) is a system that automatically detects and authorizes vehicles at access gates without requiring manual input from the driver or security officer. This system increases efficiency, security, and convenience by using advanced technology to recognize vehicles and grant access quickly.
How AVI Works
Different types of AVI systems are used to identify and allow authorized vehicles into a warehouse or gated facility.
Types of AVI Systems
- Long-Range RFID Tags – A small RFID tag is installed inside a vehicle. When the vehicle approaches the gate, the system automatically detects the tag and grants access without the driver needing to stop or take any action.
- Remote Control Access – Similar to a garage door opener, a driver can press a remote control inside the vehicle, and the gate will open instantly.
- Proximity Card Readers – A proximity card is used by the driver. Once the card is within the required range of the reader, the system detects it and opens the gate automatically.
- Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) – Cameras scan the license plate of the vehicle, and a computer system checks the database to determine if the vehicle is authorized. If approved, the gate opens without manual input.
Why is AVI Important for Warehouse Security?
Warehouse sites often deal with a high volume of vehicle traffic, including employees, delivery trucks, and contractors. AVI systems help manage access efficiently while improving security by:
- Preventing Unauthorized Entry – Only vehicles registered in the system are allowed access.
- Speeding Up Entry & Exit – Authorized vehicles do not need to stop for manual verification, reducing wait times and traffic congestion.
- Reducing Security Risks – AVI helps prevent tailgating, where unauthorized vehicles try to follow authorized ones through the gate.
- Improving Record-Keeping – The system logs every vehicle that enters and exits, providing security officers with an accurate record of movements.
Security Officer Responsibilities in AVI-Controlled Areas
Even with an automatic system, security officers play an important role in monitoring and ensuring proper use of AVI systems at warehouse facilities. Officers should:
- Verify that all authorized vehicles have the correct AVI tag, remote, or credentials.
- Watch for tailgating or unauthorized vehicles attempting to enter.
- Ensure the system is functioning properly and report any malfunctions to supervisors.
- Manually verify visitors or delivery trucks that are not in the AVI system.
- Follow post instructions regarding manual override procedures in case of system failure.
